Call for Board of Trustees Nominations

The Board of Trustees nominates members each year to the Board. The number of nominations depends on the terms that are ending in any given year. Board of Trustees terms are staggered six-year terms so every cycle will have a different amount of open positions.

How to Submit a Board of Trustees Nomination

The Nominating Committee of the Board of Trustees is now accepting nominations of candidates to fill Trustee vacancies beginning July 1, 2025. The new Trustees will be elected by the full Board of Trustees at their meeting on June 17, 2025.

The deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, November 15, 2024.

  • The Committee seeks recommendations of candidates who are able and willing to assume the responsibilities of trusteeship that include, but are not limited to:

    1. Commitment of time and talent; consistent attendance at and participation in board and committee meetings
    2. Previous board experience, preferably in a leadership role
    3. Ability to maintain a universitywide perspective on issues and concerns
    4. Promotion of the university’s mission through advocacy and oversight of policy
    5. Active involvement in the life of the university
    6. Service as an ambassador for the university
    7. Annual contribution to the university commensurate with ability so that Rutgers is amongst a Trustee’s top charitable contributions
    8. Ability and willingness to support all Board initiatives

  • The Nominating Committee considers many factors when selecting a new Trustee including:

    • All aspects of a candidate's background - we are looking for qualified individuals who improve the board’s diversity in race, gender, ethnicity, education, geographic location, professional experience and life experience.
    • Capability of having regular attendance and participation at board and committee meetings (expected to attend a minimum of two-thirds of all Board of Trustees and committee meetings to which they are assigned and become actively involved in the life of the university.)
    • Consideration should be given to an individual’s personal and professional skills, and this year, the Committee would like to receive nominations of individuals with experience in healthcare; investments; and audit and compliance; as well as individuals residing in Essex and Middlesex counties, as required by law (Rutgers Act of 1956). However, the committee will consider the nomination of anyone who is interested in serving on the Rutgers Board of Trustees, including candidates that reside outside the State of New Jersey.
    • Each nomination must include the candidate’s resume or curriculum vitae and/or a biographical sketch. Nominations will not be accepted without a resume, curriculum vitae and/or biographical sketch.
    • The Nominating Committee of the Board of Trustees will accept a maximum of four (4) letters of support for each nominee. Letters may be appended to the nomination form or sent to secretary@oq.rutgers.edu.
    • Self-nominations are accepted, however it is strongly encouraged that support letters (up to 4) accompany self-nominations.
    • The Rutgers Act of 1956 specifies that no person may serve as a member of the Board of Trustees if they are receiving remuneration for services from the university.
    • Candidates must avoid any conflict of interest or the appearance of conflict of interest consistent with University Policy 50.1.12: Conflicts of Interest Policy for Members of the Boards of Governors and Trustees, the Camden Board of Directors, and University Officers.
  • Complete the Trustee Nomination Form to submit your nomination for consideration. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, November 15, 2024.

How to Submit a Student Charter Trustee Nomination

Nomination of candidates to fill two open Student Charter Trustee seats are currently being accepted: one for a six-year term and another for a partial two-year term beginning July 1, 2025.  All new Trustees will be elected by the full Board of Trustees at their meeting on June 17, 2025.

The deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, November 15, 2024.

  • The Nominating Committee of the Board of Trustees considers many factors when evaluating a possible new Student Charter Trustee. These include all aspects of a student’s experiences as well as the diversity and demographics of the board. Student Charter Trustees must be willing to attend board meetings, serve on board committees, and become actively involved in the life of the University. Consideration will be given to personal, academic, and leadership skills. 

    Specifically, the Nominating Committee seeks candidates who are able and willing to assume the responsibilities of trusteeship that include, but are not limited to:

    • Commitment of time and talent
    • Attendance at and participation in board and committee meetings - both as a student and after graduation
    • Involvement in the life of the University
    • Consideration of universitywide perspectives on issues and concerns
    • Service as an ambassador for the University
    • Exuberance in promoting the University’s mission
    • Recognition of the University’s achievements and contributions to the public good

    • State law prohibits members of the Board of Trustees from receiving remuneration from the University. Students may not be employed or compensated for service by the University during their term as a Trustee.
  • To be considered eligible, nominees must:

    • Be registered as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, who will have completed a minimum of two full years of undergraduate study or one full year of graduate study at Rutgers University at the time of election (June 17, 2025)
    • Be in good academic, judicial, and financial standing
    • Demonstrate academic achievement with a “B” average or equivalent
    • Demonstrate engagement in the life of the University
    • Demonstrate co-curricular achievements and service to the University Community
    • Have the ability and a commitment to attend meetings throughout the entire term
    • Have the ability and a commitment to attend university events and programs throughout the entire term
  • Please complete the Student Charter Trustee Nomination Form, if you know or would like to nominate a student who is eligible and may be interested.
